Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
